Can Horses Be Heroes? You Bet They Can!

There’s someone I want you to meet.

She’s just like you.

She knows the healing power of a horse when paired with a hurting child or teen.  Because she experienced it firsthand. 

“I was born with a cleft palate and was bullied mercilessly,” says Jewell.  “Horses became my refuge.”

In third grade, she started her own jewelry-making business to raise money for her first horse and the rest is history.

Jewell has dedicated her life to saving horses (and all kinds of four-legged animals) from abuse and neglect.  She manages Pender County’s Animal Shelter, which is located outside of Wilmington, NC. “But horses are my passion.”

So, it’s not surprising that Jewell would just happen to own two horses that would be perfect for Hope Reins.

“I read the book, Joey, and fell in love with the ranch and it’s mission,” says Jewell.   And, after over two decades of feeding, training, and loving Peter and Hero, Jewell donated them to Hope Reins.

But these are not just two ordinary horses.   They’re heroes.

They’ve spent the better part of their lives assisting Jewell in rescue and rehabilitation work.  “They trained first responders in disaster relief,” she says.

For example, in hurricanes and dangerous flooding situations, fatigued horses need life-saving flotation devices and harnesses to save them from drowning.  Peter would be immersed in lake water while rescue teams practiced rescue techniques on him.

They also helped rehabilitate rescued horses.  “I’ve paired them up with everything from wild horses to orphaned foals.   They’ve been amazing partners in healing.”

We are so thankful to Jewell.
