Last week, I shared with you that one of the heroic horses you helped Hope Reins adopt needed to have his blind eye removed.

Zeb, who was a highly-trained horse with the Raleigh Police Department’s Mounted unit, has been blind in his left eye since he was rescued at an auction in 2012.

It’s believed he injured it while working as an Amish cart horse.

The surgery, called Enucleation, removed Zeb’s eyeball (“globe”) along with some of the eye’s connective and muscular tissue.

While it sounds gruesome, the procedure is actually a common surgical option when medical management of eye diseases fails.

And, I want to let you know that the surgery couldn’t have gone better for our gentle giant!

The vet changed his bandages this week and told us removal was definitely the right decision.  He said the eye was severely degraded, his lens was prolapsed and bobbling around inside his eye.  And his whole eye was ulcerated.  You can only imagine how much better our sweet boy feels!
