Frailty & An NC State Ballcap.
The other day, I was reminded of the frailty of life because of a beautiful little boy’s comment about his hat.
His name is Billy, and you’re helping him heal at Hope Reins with your generous gifts after he lost two of the most important people in his life within just days of each other.
His maternal grandfather had been ill for a while and was in hospice when Billy’s dad, William “Billy” Foy Beal IV, joined his brother for a much-needed ski vacation in Colorado.
Billy IV had a passion for all sports and loved being outside, according to his wife, Ann. “He was happiest when around water regardless of its form,” she says.
Tragically, Billy IV died suddenly from complications due to oxygen deprivation at high altitudes while skiing. Billy’s granddad died the next day.
“My husband was an incredible father and loved his children completely,” says Ann. “We are grateful that Hope Reins is a special place, safe and comforting for Billy and his sister.”
What was this 11-year-old’s comment that touched my heart so?
When Billy’s mentor, Ron, remarked about the old NC State ball cap the little boy was wearing, Billy shared that it was one of only two things that still carries the scent of his dad, which is why Billy cherishes it so much.
Friends, life is fragile, unstable and unpredictable. Sometimes, you might only be left with the memories—or a scent—of those people you have loved. Cherish these relationships.
And thank you for helping kids like Billy.
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Psalm 90:12
