Zeb & Mason Playing in the Creek.

I want to share with you a little bit about the magnificent creatures you support at Hope Reins.

Because you make it possible for our heroic horses to help kids heal, but you might wonder just how exactly that happens.

As adult humans, we tend to be motivated by praise, recognition and material things (dogs are as well)!  But horses are prey animals who are driven by a different set of internal instincts.

Comfort.  Safety.  And, play.  These three things are vitally important to our heroes.  First, they need to have their needs met (comfort in the form of food). Secondly, since they are prey animals, they need to feel safe. And finally, they learn, socialize and communicate through play!

And guess whose needs are in alignment with horses?  Yup. You guessed it, traumatized kids.  

Everything we do at Hope Reins flows from the belief that God designed us to be rooted in relationships.  And when a child or teen can befriend a horse, you are facilitating a beautiful connection for victims of trauma who are understandably wary of humans (because they’ve most likely been harmed by them).

Mason and Zeb (shown above) have such a remarkable friendship.  Over the years, a trusting relationship has been orchestrated between the two with the help of Mason’s mentor, Whitney.  The duo now plays hide-and-seek and are often splashing in the creek together.
