You’re Probably Wondering About These Photos.
You’re probably wondering about the above photos!
These shots were taken from a “Sensory Obstacle Course” for the kids and horses during summer camp last week. The course included an array of items, such as stuffed animals, mirrors, and a piano.
And I want to tell you about the profound experiences the kids had because of your generous support. (As well as the brilliance of our programs team!)
You know that trauma triggers strong physical and emotional reactions in kids that can persist long after the event. Many times, a child lives in a perpetual state of heightened anxiety or hypervigilance—leading to emotional dysregulation and isolation.
Similarly, horses, as prey animals, are hypervigilant (especially when facing new experiences) until they learn they are not in danger.
And this is one of the many reasons why horses are such great therapy partners for kids in trauma!
By asking the kids to introduce the unfamiliar scents, objects and sounds to their horses, they witnessed an array of different reactions from their four-footed friends. Some were anxious and retreated. Others were curious and playful.
But most importantly, the kids were asked to practice being like Jesus, our Prince of Peace, and help imbue each horse with serenity, calmness and peace. And, one by one, each of these beautiful children quietly led their trusted partner around the course whispering reassurances that everything’s going to be all right. Just like Jesus does for them.
Thank you for giving the kids extraordinary experiences at summer camp this year! They’re playing, learning and healing because of you!
Have a great weekend!
