Thank You for Supporting Zeb When He Needs It Most.
You most likely remember Zeb (he’s hard to forget!).
He’s one of the heroic horses you helped Hope Reins adopt last spring.
And although he spent years as a highly-trained horse with the Raleigh Police Department’s Mounted Unit, his demeanor has always been that of a big teddy bear.
So it might surprise you to know that Zeb has been blind in his left eye since he was rescued at an auction in 2012. It was thought he’d injured it while working as a Amish cart horse.
As Zeb aged, his blind eye continued to deteriorate, taking on a cloudy color and causing him some discomfort while on the force. And now at Hope Reins, it’s become evident after extensive medical treatment and consultations with our vet, that our gentle giant’s condition has worsened causing him great pain.
So we want to let you know that today, Zeb will undergo a surgical procedure called Enucleation, where his eyeball (“globe”) along with some of the eye’s connective and muscular tissues will be removed.
This procedure, while sounding gruesome, is actually a common surgical option when medical management of eye diseases fails.
The prognosis for Zeb is also 100 percent positive because not only will his pain be alleviated, but his ability to maneuver around the ranch and partner in sessions will be the same as always.
And finally, Zeb’s journey can be shared with our kids as a testimony of courage and faith in God’s unconditional love for us all.
