Pioneers of Black Philanthropy

I love to share great stories with you.  Especially when it involves generous people like you!

So in honor of Black History Month, I want to tell you about some amazing Black philanthropists who changed the world around them.

Take Frederick D. Patterson (shown above).  When he took over as president of Tuskegee University, the school was desperate for funds.

His counterparts at other historically Black colleges around the nation faced similar fates.  Undaunted, Patterson devised a plan in 1943.

He wrote a historic open letter in the Pittsburgh Courier urging the university presidents to “pool their small monies together and make a united appeal to the national conscience.”  Sound familiar?

A year later, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) was born, raising billions and impacting half a million Black students!

That’s the power of philanthropy!
