When 10-year-old Sarah first came to Hope Reins, she loved horses — but she couldn’t meet her mentor’s gaze.

After years of loss and instability, trusting people wasn’t easy. Then one day, she noticed something in Pax, a quiet gelding who always seemed on alert.

When her mentor explained that Pax had been abandoned and now needed to feel safe before relaxing, Sarah paused.

“I do the same thing,” she said. “That’s why I don’t look you in the eye.”

That moment changed everything. Sarah and Pax began a journey together — one of quiet presence, shared understanding, and growing trust. Over time, Sarah began to open up, laugh, and connect. Today, she’s thriving — more confident, more connected, and able to simply be a kid.
